English-medium school Groote Schuur High School was founded in 1959 as a co-educational Afrikaans High School in the Vredenhof residence, presently the Peter Clark Art Center in the leafy suburb of Newlands. The school started with 37 pupils. Over the years, pupil numbers have increased and after the addition of six extra classrooms in 2011, the numbers have grown to over 1000 learners. The present school building in Palmyra Road, Newlands was inaugurated in June 1964. In 1978 Nassau High School amalgamated with Groote Schuur. | ||

GSHS Core Values | ||
INTEGRITY The fundamental relationship between our words and deeds is one that we hold in the highest regard. What we say and what we do is always in agreement. Our unassailable moral character is visible in all of our relationships and all of our choices. | BELONGING We are a family and as such we ensure that everyone knows that they matter, that they are important, that they are cared for and that they are valued. We have a home here, in Groote Schuur High, where we know we are cherished. | GROWTH As human beings, we believe that we all have the inborn ability to grow. We acknowledge and celebrate the development of our skills, of our acquisition of knowledge and of our enhanced understanding of the world around us. Learning is a lifelong endeavor that helps us to grow into well balanced, caring human beings. |
EXCELLENCE Our
determination to excel is one of the corner stones of our school. Excellence is
our benchmark and we attain quality in all that we do. We understand that our excellence is attained
not just in service of ourselves as individuals, but in service to our greater
community around us. | ACCOUNTABILITY We
take responsibility for our words, our choices, our responses and our thoughts,
and we realize that only then, when we take responsibility, do we allow
ourselves to grow into our full potential. We learn from our mistakes and we
grow in strength because of these lessons. | SERVICE What we do changes the world around us. We make a difference in our
school community, as well as in the communities in which we live and through
which we move. Meeting the needs of others – giving of our time and our energy
– meaningfully alters the lives of others and of ourselves. |
STEWARDSHIP We take responsibility for the resources and physical spaces of Groote Schuur High School. We understand that what we use now is not just for us but for those who come after us. We respect and appreciate what we have, knowing that our respect and appreciation will make it a pleasure for all to be at Groote Schuur High School. | RESPECT The value that underpins and supports all other values is that of respect. We respect each other in word and deed. We respect our environment and the spaces we occupy. Our respect for Groote Schuur High School is visible in the way we carry our brand in appearance and behavior. |
